At the time the band wasn't riding around all comfy like in a quality bus like those used nowadays. They tended to sleep in the daytime (if you could call it sleep) until they were ushered to soundcheck. Getting busted in the middle of the day can severely interrupt a good nap to say the least.

Yeah, but that doesn't qualify as "sleep before I travel." That qualifies as "sleep before I eat dinner and play that gig." Guess it didn't scan as well.

Amazingly, I just found the original lines! Yes, folks, here were the original options:

I'd like to get some sleep before my dinner
But if you've got a warrant, I guess I'm gonna be thinner

I'd like to get some sleep before my soundcheck
But if you're got a warrant, I guess the sound will be "blech!"

Fortunately artistic license ultimately won out ...

As you can see, the scrupulous accuracy thing wasn't working out for Hunter at all. Just imagine the long-term trend it could have set.
